As a Clinical Psychologist working with those infected by HIV/AIDS, the doctrine of the Episcopal Church (which I had been very active in throughout my life) became too constrictive and and no longer met my spiritual needs. I left in 1984 and I embarked upon the "Great Church Search"; after four years and after meeting with the Rev. Dr. Laurel Hallman I joined First Unitarian Church of Dallas in 1988. During that first meeting Laurel informed me that several church members had AIDS, and that ministering to them had become a high priority as part of the Church’s vast outreach as a welcoming congregation and it’s commitment to social action, social justice and community service.
It was this awareness... that this church truly “practiced what it preached”... that felt like home to me.
Laurel's wisdom, her comfort with the Unknown, and her faith in the Known, has been a bedrock for my personal spiritual development these past 20 years. Over this time, I have witnessed Laurel's abilities both as an inspired preacher and her impressive capabilities as an astute leader of a large and complex organization. She is the ideal candidate for President of the UUA.

Laurel Hallman brings sensitivity about, and experience with, governance issues that could greatly increase the effectiveness of the UUA. This is important infrastructure stuff to which attention must be paid. - Denny Davidoff
Jerry and Denny Davidoff have been recognized UUA lay leaders since 1968 and are shown here at the General Assembly in 2006, receiving the Award for Distinguished Service to the Cause of Unitarian Universalism.
