While in law school, I attended a mid-size congregation led by Reverend Laurel Hallman. I appreciated the intentional ministry Reverend Hallman offered to young adults; she modeled congregational leadership which spoke well to the wide-range of ages and diversity within our liberal religious community. The depth of Reverend Hallman's sermons, her humor, spiritual direction, and sense of justice were part of the inspiration which led me to pursue ministry. Her leadership and encouragement sparked me to become a pioneering
As a parish minister now, I have served small, mid-size and large congregations. When I look back to the ministry I experienced with Laurel, I am struck by the pastoral presence and spiritual direction she offered, while continually demonstrating strong administrative and organizational skills. One phrase that remains with me, which she taught in an Adult Education setting, is a guiding principles when pursuing the goals and dreams one has set forth in life. “Hold onto them lightly,” she said, “Hold on to them. Pursue them with direction, discernment, passion and intention… and also hold onto them lightly, in case course corrections and adjustments need to be made.”
Her ministry has always demonstrated this profound philosophy.
