Spiritual vitality has to be the foundation for every other goal towards which we strive.

My Fellow Unitarian Universalists, in July, we were all shocked and saddened by the tragic shooting at the Tennessee Valley UU Church in Knoxville, Tennessee. As a Unitarian Universalist, I found profound healing and comfort in the rapid response and pastoral presence on the scene of our UUA President, Bill Sinkford. To me, there is no more important function, no more important role, of the President of our Association than that of spiritual leader.
And that is why I wholeheartedly endorse Laurel Hallman to be our next President. I can imagine no one more qualified to serve as our spiritual leader; there is no one whom I would rather have responding to a pastoral crisis, comforting the bereaved, dealing with the media, or speaking for all of us, as Unitarian Universalists, in a crisis, than Laurel Hallman.
As I look to the future of our movement -- as I consider the spiritual challenges we will be facing in the years to come -- I am now more confident than ever that Laurel Hallman is the right person to lead us into that future together.

In faith and optimism,

Rev. Bill Gupton
